Congratulations are in order for the publication of the book Interlegal Reasoning: balancing at the interfaces, edited by Gabriel Alejandro Encinas Duarte and Jan-R. Sieckmann, with Springer. Now a Professor at the Facultad de Ciencias Administrativas y Sociales, in Mexico, Dr. Duarte obtained his PhD at the Scuola and was among the first members of CIR, right from the start!

The book certainly pushes CIR’s efforts forward, by introducing interlegal reasoning as a distinct conceptual category for managing conflicts between competing legal systems (national, European, international, and indigenous law), and combining inter-legality and legal argumentation theory to address transnational normative conflicts.

The book strongly focuses on legal reasoning and methodologies, particularly balancing. It engages with the “turn to interfaces,” understood as interactive, multi-perspectival connections shaped by the legal reasoning of participants regarding the facts at issue. The contributions examine interlegal conflicts broadly and treat balancing as a method of rational justification.

Among the high-level contributions, there are chapters written by Dr. Gurkan Çapar, who also obtained his PhD from Sant’Anna, Dr. Marcos de Armenteras Cabot, who was a postdoc at the Center, and Dr. Walter Navia, who recently obtained his PhD from Roma Tre and was a visiting scholar at CIR.
